The Western Wisconsin Labor Council participates in and sponsors a number of key community events during the year to enhance the quality of life in the Coulee Region. Whether it’s the Letter Carriers’ annual food drive, the Labor Day Parade and Labor Fest, honoring all who have lost their lives on the job or treating local kids to a day of free fishing – it’s the council’s way of enriching our community and giving back to the public.
However, we need your help. These events are becoming more costly to conduct each year. Parade and permit fees increase, expenses are on the rise, and program revenues are falling. Any and all dominations made here will be used only for expenses in conducting the council’s four “marquee” community events listed below. Donations will not be used for any other purpose
Labor Day Parade and Labor Fest
The parade is a 50+ year tradition in La Crosse and affects the entire Coulee Region. Not only is this a day for ALL workers to shine but it is an opportunity to deliver smiles to hundreds of children with this family friendly parade and fest full of “hometown” flavor.
Worker’s Memorial Day
Each and every day an average of 13 workers die on the job as a result of workplace injuries—women and men who go to work, never to return home. In 2011, 4,600 workers lost their lives on the job. Here in Wisconsin, 89 workers were killed on the job in 2011. We all owe an obligation that we can never fully repay for these lives lost in pursuit of a paycheck, but on Workers Memorial Day (April 28) we honor their sacrifice with a memorial service and commemoration.
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
An annual springtime event sponsored by the Letter Carriers’ and locally co-sponsored by the labor council and the local United Way. In 2013 the La Crosse area contributed over 100,000 pounds of food for area food pantries.
Kid’s Fishing Day
The labor council teams up with the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s and City of La Crosse Parks Department to host the Annual Take Kids Fishing Day event. This unique event is free and open to the public. Fishing poles, bait, lunch, and free door prizes are provided – no child goes away empty-handed. This event provides an opportunity for children who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience the joys of fishing. Thanks to this event, over 100 children had an opportunity to fish and experience the great outdoors in 2013.
