On March 1st, AFT 6502 (United Academic Professionals of UW-La Crosse), organized a gathering beneath the iconic campus clock tower. During this rally, they passionately appealed to both state lawmakers and the UW Board of Regents, urging them to increase the allocation of public funds towards the state’s higher education institutions. It is distressing to note that over the past decade, state funding for the UW system has plummeted from its position as the primary source of financial backing to a mere third-ranking source.
During the event, various individuals including faculty members, students, and community leaders such as La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds and State Representative Jill Billings emphasized the significance of funding for UW System schools in ensuring the success of both the students and the institution.
In the past, the annual budget of a UW System school was predominantly funded by the state, accounting for 60% of the total. However, over time, this percentage has significantly decreased and now stands at 18.5%.
As a result of insufficient funding, students are burdened with higher tuition rates and additional fees in order to compensate for the financial shortfall.
To guarantee the accessibility and affordability of higher education for all Wisconsin residents, it is crucial to maintain consistent pressure on elected officials.
